Last bench. Wednesday afternoon , 2 hours of machine design. God! I had to stay awake or I run the risk of losing attendance. What do i do? Nothing struck, so I decided to write ... Here goes.
The Bucket List
Yeah , You got that right . If u didn't, it is the recently released Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman starer. A very enjoyable film , about two cancer patients as different as Chalk and cheese who meet in the hospital and prepare a list of fantasies that they want to undergo before they kick the bucket.
The movie mainly revolves around the list in which they pen down the various acts that a normal life does not offer. They enjoy themselves right from attempting sky diving to visiting the pyramids of Egypt.
On the whole it was a nice movie with an emotional climax, resulting in me coming out of the theater pretty satisfied. The movie just made me think, like, What do I classify as must do's before I kick my own bucket. And since we are dealing with an unpredictable concept called Death here I felt that I had to start as soon as possible.
I penned down some things that i really really wanted to do...... here we go..
1. Watch an India Pakistan match live , from any stadium in India. Preferably Chepauk
2. Watch Manchester United play (hopefully Man Utd vs Liverpool) at Old Trafford , Manchester
3. Watch Real Madrid play at the Santiago Bernabeu .
4. Bungee Jumping (Feel thrilled already)
5. Smoke a cigarette (only once , plain curiosity)
6.Go to an Iron Maiden live concert (you cant see my head banging now)
7.Make at least one parent in the world realise that there is life beyond Education.
8. Get to know how to use a real gun. Own one if possible(without bullets of course)
9. Get myself tattooed (been wanting one for 3 years now)
10. Save a person or persons from grave danger and be the hero.
I may add more in the future but will remove one only if have achieved it.

Lonely Island
And so he treads on the lonely island
His brown legs wading through the sand
No cold , No fever, No semblance of fear
No talk , No banter, No near and dear
Neither does it burn nor does it rain
He feels no tension; he feels no pain
The air wraps him around like a shawl
He has no pride , he does not fall
No joy , No sorrow , No highs , No lows
He has no wishes , no friends or foes
He has no fancy , he has no whim
Life or death means nothing to him
Walking through the sand he does not tire
Heaven or hell he has no desire
He feels untied , he feels free
He is the lone apple in a lonely tree
He has nothing to spend, nothing to give
All he has is his life to live

Selfless?
Yesterday.. Yes thats right.. It was yesterday. I was finding it hard to kill time. I tried watchin tv but then, there was nothing worth watching. I tried playing the latest fifa installment on my comp but, was in no mood for it. Finally, after hours of indecision I decided to watch an old episode of "Friends", which i had stored in my comp. I had a good laugh, the best part being the one where Joey tells Phoeby to find a "Selfless good deed". Well actually Joey wat quite right. There is no deed(forget Good) that can be called selfless.
I asked myself a question. What is man's purpouse of life in this world? the answer is of course happiness. Every thought pursuit and action of man has only one seeking. Happiness. Whether it be a good deed or not , man only taregets the happiness that can be derived from it. He might not be selfish, but he defenitely isn't selfless. I can go to the extent of saying that selflessness is a virtue that is practically impossible to execute.
I saw a cricket match recently where a new batsman who entered the scene towards the end of an innings took a quick single to get the well set batsman on strike. The commentator called it selfless. But then, how can this be called selfless when the motive of person itself isnt altruistic. A batsman takes the single because he gains happiness by playing second fiddle and trhus earning the respect of the commentator.
A good deed is a good deed. It simply cannot be selfless because whoever does the good deed feels happy doing it. If he thinks that, the deed wont make him happy , he simply wont do it.
Selflessness is unthinkable and impossible. Even if a man tries to be selfless the act of trying it itself makes him not so.
It must not be confused that I am trying to say that man is a selfish . He just, is not selfless

All about the money?
The Barclay's Premier League. A well packaged footballing product where 20 teams battle it out every season for various rewards such as the championship, a place in UEFA's champions league , the UEFA cup or even avoiding relegation and staying in the premier league. Every other club in england hope for only one thing. A place in the premier league. The richest league in the world. A money making machine and deservedly so , featuring the quickest brand of football and some of the best players in the world.
The League is controlled by the England FA who in my opinion make a lot of questionable decisions from time to time. One such act which falls in to this category is the idea proposed by the FA to hold one extra league match per team outside England. In addition to the 38 matches that the tams play every season they are supposed to play one more match in loctions such as Hong Kong, New York, Los Angeles, Singapore, Sydney, Johannesburg, Dubai and Beijing.
Nothing wrong in providing good football in areas deprived of it and giving them the premier league experience but this move if it goes through will have huge financial implications. The FA seems to have got this idea when an NFL game was played in the New Wembley recently. But the FA's interests seem nothing but commercial. With the extra game there are 10 league matches played in various locations in the world and a huge amount the profit going to the FA.
Every club wants to play in the premier league and obviously the clubs already there would want to stay there. It is just because of the financial boost these clubs might receive by just managing to stay in the premier league. In such a situation playing one match overseas may have huge implications in the title race. Even though the top five sides will be protected from drawing each other it still makes a world of difference playing a side that is placed sixth and a side that is placed nineteenth in the premier league. But even that is not my concern. Big teams find a way to win irrespective of the opponent. The real concern is the smaller teams who battle year in year out just to stay in the premier league. The financial benefits of playing in the premier league are huge, and this rule may just result that a team might stay in the premier league or get relegated by the luck (or lack of it) of the draw.
Huge profits and commercial success are guaranteed in this venture but its time for the FA to stop looking just at the commercial success of the venture and look at preparing a level playing field for all the teams. Its time the small teams got some sympathy from the FA in a league which is dominated by commercial interests.
